ARt for the joy of ARt

I draw what makes me happy. I like that other people seem to enjoy it too. My art is a storage area for anything that crosses my mind and it is my escape from the crazy world I am often representing. But most of all it is there to be enjoyed or ignored, whichever you prefer.

Each artwork is A1 in size and takes about a month to complete.

WORK IN PROGRESS

Why these artworks?

I began my artistic life as the cartoonist for the Mid-Sussex Times before taking on a role as illustrator for the editor’s section of Build-It magazine. My cartoons were bought by politicians, corporations and, surprisingly, the characters I portrayed.

Eventually, the conflicts created by having to be polite to local politicians, while still being funny, and drawing amusing cartoons of family members while ‘making it flattering’ caused me to fall out of love with drawing… for 20 years…except, that is for the doodles that filled my notebooks and kept me entertained through numerous, tedious meetings.

About a year ago, I was adding to a doodle that was covering my desk, thinking that it might look better on a wall, when a colleague told me that they had heard a song that was articulating my philosophy on life. “Something Will Happen, Something Will Be Learned”. I decided that would be the start of my next doodle and this time I would begin it on an A1 board (rather than my desk or my workbook) and see where it took me.

A lot of people seem to like them.

These artworks have become my dumping ground for whatever crosses my mind, and my meditation from the pressures of life. They are my happy place. There are a lot of bad things in the World - a lot of pain and unfairness. There are other artists who portray these sad things beautifully and importantly. I will contribute to changing that in other ways, but not through the content of my art. I am very happy to be here, alive, I choose to see the good in people, and am ruthlessly optimistic - I choose these things to inform my art. The work is unapologetically positive.

The messages within these works, some obvious and some harder to find, will mean a lot to some and nothing to others. They sometimes veer towards the philosophical, or the political, often focus on the ludicrous, but they are always authentic - it is the one arena where I do not want to be influenced by a concern for what other people think. For this reason, I have left the caricatures behind and commissions are only taken where the timescales are flexible and the brief gives me complete freedom to explore the subject. If you like my work I am pleased you enjoy it. If not, you are welcome to ignore it altogether.

I hope you find some joy in there. Paul x
